Joy Alemazung

Global Justice and Human Rights

Joy Alemazung is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow in the Global Justice and Human Rights section. He is the first black Mayor of a German city and Chairman of the administrative community Rosenstein (Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Rosenstein) composing of five Municipalities.

Joy arrived Germany in 1997 for studies and holds a double M.A. in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Kiel. After defending his Ph.D., he worked as lecturer at the University of Applied Science Bremen before joining Engagement Global gGmbH as Project Manager for federal programmes on sustainable municipal development and political education in the federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Before his landslide victory against five other candidates during the mayoral election in Oktober 2021, and becoming the Mayor of Heubach, he was senior policy adviser at the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.
