April 2025

On 29 April, the Global Alliance for Peace Operations (GAPO) convened its first online policy workshop in the run-up to the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial that will take place in Berlin in Mid-May. The workshop brought together more than 80 peacekeeping experts and institutions from around the globe to present the initial results of the Alliance’s background research and analyses to the German Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence and to key UN representatives. The purpose of the workshop was to provide concrete collective civil society and research input to the UN and organizers of the Peacekeeping Ministerial – at a crucial moment for the future of UN peace operations and multilateralism more general.

The Workshop was divided into three sessions, providing input on topics ranging from the ‘Future of Peace Operations’, ‘The Protection of Civilians’, ‘The Future of Peacebuilding’, ‘Local Perspectives on Peacekeeping’, ‘Peacekeeping Partnerships’, ‘Leadership in and for Peacekeeping’ and ‘Women’s Meaningful Participation in Future Peacekeeping Models’. In addition, the policy recommendation of the Alliance’s 18 short issue papers were presented. The recommendations were discussed by representatives from both German ministries and senior UN personnel, who congratulated the members of the alliance on the high quality of the input and many useful concrete policy recommendations that will be taken into account during the Peacekeeping Ministerial Discussions.

The next event will be the GAPO Policy Symposium in Berlin, a day before the opening of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial.
