Joachim Koops, Chair of the Board of the Global Governance Institute, was interviewed for an in-depth episode of the Estonian documentary “Johannese lähetamine”. The seven-episode programme focused on local and European perspectives of EU candidate countries and on a ‘Brussels’ perspective from key decision-makers (including High Representative/Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas) and senior analysts (from Carnegie Europe, Politico and GGI).
In his conversation with Estonian journalist Johannes Tralla, Joachim drew on the insights of GGI’s in-depth report for the European Parliament on the democracy, human rights, rule of law and geopolitical dimensions of EU enlargement. He stressed that EU enlargement, if done well, remains one of the most important and effective EU foreign policy and good governance tools - particularly in a new geopolitical context. However, internal challenges at the national and EU-levels as well as growing impatience amongst the populations of the accession countries and incomplete transformations of their political systems must be urgently tackled.
