In a 9 July interview with Deutsche Welle, GGI Senior Fellow Dominik Tolksdorf discussed Trump’s recent remarks on Russia and Ukraine. He noted that Trump’s public criticism and even threats directed at Vladimir Putin may signal a recognition that Putin never seriously pursued peace, but instead sought to manipulate Trump throughout his presidency.
While the comments mark a notable rhetorical shift, Dominik cautioned against interpreting them as a fundamental change in Trump’s foreign policy. "This may be more of a tactical move to pressure Putin or to deflect criticism at home of being too soft on Russia," he explained. Trump, he added, is likely to maintain his long-standing view that Europe should shoulder the primary burden of military aid to Ukraine, particularly in terms of funding.
