The Global Alliance for Peace Operations brings together more than 50 think tanks, research institutes and civil society organisations, and close to 100 experts, working on United Nations and regional approaches to peace operations. It was launched on 28 April 2025 and is coordinated by the Global Governance Institute in Brussels, the Berlin Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF) and Amani Africa Media and Research Services, in liaison with the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Federal Ministry of Defence.
GAPO was created to give civil society a direct route into the intergovernmental deliberations around the 2025 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin, at a point when the future of peace operations was under review. It has continued since as a standing platform, convening workshops on the protection of civilians, the use of force, United Nations police, African Union partnerships, climate change and cross-border crisis management.
GGI hosts the Alliance and serves as its secretariat.
Eight collaborative policy papers and around 20 issue papers fed the recommendations put to the 2025 Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin. The Alliance convened Peace Operations Review Week in New York in November 2025, followed by a series of thematic workshop reports published in January 2026.
